Former Luthra & Luthra associate and Spice Global in-houser Mitali Yadav has started up disputes and intellectual property (IPR) firm Alba Law Offices in Delhi with Amity Delhi 2011 classmate Zeeshan Hashmi.
Yadav started up Alba in May 2015, after one year of working in house with Spice. Hashmi practiced independently since graduating in 2011.
The firm has three lawyers in addition to Yadav and salaried partner Hashmi, and operates from a 2500 square feet space on Ferozshah Road, where it moved to last month. It focusses on litigation, corporate real estate and IP disputes.
Yadav said that the work is spread in a 60-40 ration between corporate and IPR on the one hand and litigation on the other, and comes from clients in the real estate, education and pharmaceutical sectors, in addition to big conglomerates.
“The biggest challenge, being a young firm, is for [prospective clients] to look at you as a professional rather than a baby. And that would remain a challenge, I think, for the next two to three years,” commented Yadav adding that relying on referrals is their main mode of rainmaking.
She said that in addition to the “big players” that have drifted to them also through conflict of interest situations with bigger firms, Alba is mainly targeting the start-up market currently as it is easier for the young firm to work with young businesses.
“Coming from big firms we’ve all seen that some clients [of big firms] inevitably get neglected,” commented Yadav. She said that one of Alba’s competitive strategies is for each of the five lawyers in the firm to devote their attention to one client and “update [the client] regularly about [case] developments”.
