The end of mediation between Amarchand Mangaldas managing partners Cyril and Shardul Shroff has been postponed to at least 5 May, according to sources, though it could yet take till 7 May or longer.

At the moment, there is nothing definitive and it's basically all gossip or discussions that have not concluded.
There have been a couple of names floating about in the market for a potential merger partner for SAM over the past month, most of which have not gone anywhere.
One of the current strong rumours if a merger with a top 10 RSG firm, another rumour is about a merger with a top 20 firm, and one with a top 30 firm.

Top 10 - S&R, Desai Diwanji, ELP
Top 20 - Wadia, Platinum, DSK
Top 30 - Tatva, Mulla, Majmudar
Disclaimer: List has been drawn up based merely on speculation and personal intuition.. I have not heard any rumors, not an insider of SCAM or any of the firms mentioned above..
One top 20 discussion could still be on though...
Would be interesting for SAM to merge with D&D. It is a good firm and is always in the top 3 in M&A in terms of volume. Not to forget the top in volumes until few years back. Their M&A and Corporate practice is very strong to compete with the likes of CAM or even AZB. The numbers would add up (as per B&B report). To capture Mumbai market you need a firm with a strong presence and this would be the perfect option. D&D also has a very strong PF team who are thereabouts on the PF league table and are doing well in that area. Not to forget SAM has recruited Deepto for the PF team. If he merges with D&D he gets an entire top class M&A team, PF team and a free lit team!!! Billings for D&D clients should not be an issue as it is almost as much as any other top tier firm. Billings for ALMT clients would be a major issue.
Apart from D&D, Tatva seems the only logical option but again, difficult to compete with D&D. Majmudar, Wadia and ALMT are in bad shape and wouldn't make sense for SAM to go for a sinking ship especially if he has to start from scratch. That would only be stupid. If they cannot manage their Partners and Associates and stabilise their firm, how will they assist in building a new one?
ELP is the best option... but surely is not happening!! DSK is good and going strong, but the qulity of the associate pool is not really great (not the level for Amarchand). Platinum and S&R are happy where they are. Mulla does not deserve any comments.
Let us wait and watch where does all this finally end!!
