Economic Laws Practice (ELP) partner Vinayak Burman, associate partner Amit Vyas and senior associate Archana Khosla have come together to pursue their entrepreneurial dream by starting their own law firm.
With more than three decades of experience between them in commercial transactional and litigation, the name of their new venture, Vertices Partners, has a mathematical connotation equivalent to a “meeting point” as well as suggesting an apex, they said.
Burman, who was promoted to ELP’s partnership after joining in 2013 as an associate partner, started his career at the Supreme Court with litigation after graduating from Symbiosis law school in 2005, and then went on to work with Rajinder Narain & Co in Delhi.
Prior to joining ELP, where he was a principal associate in the corporate team at Amarchand Mangaldas, spending six years at the firm.
Burman’s focus is on corporate commercial and private equity, particularly with respect to private equity investments, M&A, joint ventures and strategic acquisitions.
He has been representing private equity funds and companies in relation to investments and raising capital, as well as multi-national companies in several cross-border transactions and foreign direct investments, outbound investments, joint ventures, technology transfers and other commercial contractual aspects.
Amit Vyas specialises in dispute resolution practice and will add strategic focus on the proposed Bankruptcy Code and all other proceedings under the ambit of the National Company Law Tribunal, which is likely to be operational soon.
He had joined ELP in 2013 as an associate partner from what was then called Rajani Associates, where he’d joined in 2005 and later became an associate partner. He’d began his career at the Rajasthan advocate general's office in 2002 after graduating from Jai Narain Vyas University Jodhpur, and later joined Trilegal as an of counsel.
His work relates primarily to many types of commercial disputes, including intellectual property (IP)-related disputes, arbitration and white collar crimes.
Archana Khosla specialises in corporate commercial and private equity, and has mentored and advised several start-ups and worked on M&A, joint ventures, and angel, seed, venture capital and private equity inestments.
She was a senior associate at ELP for six years, having begun her career in the Supreme Court with litigation and thereafter with AZB & Partners in Mumbai after graduating from Army Institute of Law Mohali.
When contacted for comment, the three founding partners jointly issued the following statement via e-mail:
Proactive - pedigree - performance.
Those are the thought foundations based on which the culture of the firm will evolve.
Vertices as such has two meanings, one being the plural form of ‘vertex’ which as you know is a synonym for the apex point and the second meaning which is far closer to the essence and our hearts, is that it is the mathematical definition of that point/angle which is created when two lines ‘meet’.
Therefore, from any practice perspective, the idea is to make aspects meet and be enable the progress with pragmatism so as ensure an appropriate closure.
The idea is to facilitate transactions wherein the essence of being commercially smart as against taking pure positions. At the end of the day, clients require advisers to take pragmatism hand in hand with the interpretations.
The idea is to provide seamless service with the commercial bent of mind. Hence on those principles, we believe that creating Vertices Partners is to factor in that sweet spot of balance.
We will be having our office in Nariman Point, South Mumbai and a reasonable-sized team at the beginning of around seven to ten associates with a lean partner to associate ratio.
It has been a very smooth process and we wish to collectively thank the partnership at ELP for giving us not only their blessings but also their best wishes in our new endeavour.
ELP managing partner Rohan Shah commented by phone message: “Have spoken to Vinayak and Archana about their setting something up, we wish them the best for their venture.”

But horribly misleading title no? Its 1 Partner, 1 AP & 1 Senior Associate.....not 3 ELP Partners.....
All the best to the clients of the new firm....... hilarious!!
If you work for one of the 'brand-name' Indian firms - you most likely have 0% value add to any client. It's a handful of partners who do so - and their names and reputations are what's being traded in the form of opinions. None of them would ever deign to demean a colleague starting an entrepreneurial journey.
Your own most significant contribution to a client would be to act as an usher in a family wedding of one of the 'brand-name' partners.
Do continue to enjoy killing yourself a little bit each day.
did burman or vyas manage to woo any of their erstwhile team with them?
(The name is not only an unfortunate tongue-twister, but the convoluted reasoning behind it really made my day)...and "the idea is to provide seamless service with commercial bent of mind". Ah, well I do I hope I have seamless and sound sleep, tonight!
