Counsel to Secure Justice (CSJ)

CSJ provides survivors of sexual violence free legal support throughout criminal proceedings, from when they report the abuse to police till judgment.  We work on the ground—at the police station, hospitals and courts—advising government authorities on the law, supporting our clients and monitoring the progress of cases.  We work with trustworthy partners to ensure clients and their families receive the care and support they need to begin healing from the trauma they have suffered.

Candidate experience & qualification:

  • Bachelor of Laws degree required, Master of Laws preferred
  • Registered with the Bar Council of India
  • 4-6 years litigation experience, ideally at criminal trial court level
  • 1-2 years management experience preferred

Job description:

The Senior Associate will serve as a full-time advocate and lead a team that handles child sexual abuse cases in Delhi.

The position reports directly to the Director, Legal Interventions and is based in New Delhi, India.

Leadership and management

  • Lead and manage a team that represents victims of sexual violence throughout investigation and adjudication of their criminal cases in South Delhi.
  • Oversee the team’s legal strategy and execution to ensure clients receive effective access to the criminal justice system and team meets casework objectives.
  • Ensure team understands and strictly adheres to CSJ’s ethical guidelines when they represent clients and collaborate with government authorities and stakeholder partners.
  • Ensure team documents and records information about client cases in the case management system in a consistent, accurate, comprehensive and timely manner.
  • Mentor and develop Legal Fellows; accompany Fellows in the field to client meetings and court hearings to train them how to handle child sexual abuse cases.
  • Manage effective and efficient administration of client cases per CSJ’s established procedural systems.
  • Liaise with CSJ partner HAQ: Centre for Child Rights on the restorative justice program that connects clients with services they need to recover from sexual abuse.
  • Set objectives for direct reports, monitor progress and hold them accountable for achieving results. Meet with direct reports for check-in meetings on a weekly basis.
  • Monitor casework indicators that measure progress towards targets.
  • Lead effort to identify key problems the casework team encounters in the criminal justice system that could be targeted in systemic change initiatives.
  • Cultivate in team members servant leadership principles and help develop their professional and soft skills.

Casework

  • Attend bail hearings and oppose bail against abusers and assist the Public Prosecutor at trial hearings
  • Assist social workers for clients to obtain interim and final victim compensation from government schemes
  • Advocate for truthful and accurate police statements, medico-legal examinations, sworn statements before Magistrates and other evidence
  • Draft applications and petitions that advocate for clients’ best interest during trial
  • Assist social worker in conducting interviews and pre-trial visits and for preparing clients and families (if applicable) to testify at trial
  • Draft and submit closing arguments advocating for conviction and appropriate sentence of abusers
  • Document client information in the case management system in a consistent, accurate, comprehensive and timely manner
  • Help conduct capacity building and sensitization trainings on CSA for police and public prosecutors
  • Participate in bi-monthly casework meetings, quarterly criminal justice system observation meetings and bi-annual project review meetings
  • Proactively build relationships with government authorities, especially police and public prosecutors, to influence them to effectively investigate and adjudicate client cases

Candidate requirements:

  • Bachelor of Laws degree required, Master of Laws preferred
  • Registered with the Bar Council of India
  • 4-6 years litigation experience, ideally at criminal trial court level
  • 1-2 years management experience preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar software and database systems
  • Demonstrated commitment to the poor and vulnerable sections of society
  • Excellent comprehension of written and spoken English and Hindi
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a challenging, sometimes hostile, environment
  • Uncompromising insistence on truth, integrity and excellence in work
  • Persistent, bold, yet diplomatic, when standing up for client interests
  • Willingness to learn and stretch oneself beyond comfort levels
  • Ability to adapt to the changing environment of a young and growing organization
  • Commitment to meeting deadlines and achieving results under pressure
  • Willingness to respond to sexual assault cases at the police station at all times, including late night
