Karanjawala partner Nandini Gore is first law-firmite to hold Supreme Court AOR association office

Karanjawala & Co partner Nandini Gore yesterday became the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association’s (SCAORA) first ever office-bearer who is the member of a law firm. Gore prepares to push for AOR quota in judicial appointments, and for senior AORs to be automatically designated senior advocates, among other privileges part of the association’s agenda.

600 AORs voted in the SCAORA’s two-yearly elections on Friday. They voted in AOR Gopal Singh as AOR Shivaji M Jadhav’s successor at the presidential post, AOR Sunita Rao as the vice president and Gore as the secretary, according to Bar & Bench which reported the election results first.

Singh defeated one other incumbent for the post of president, Rao also contested against one other candidate and Gore contested against two others, said Gore adding that the votes were counted on Monday, instead of Friday, because polling lasted until the end of Friday’s working day.

Gore was an executive member in the association, alongside five other AORs. She confirmed that although Global Legal Associates founder Rajan Narain had been an executive member in the term before which she was in the executive, no law firm member had previously held office at the association.

“I have to balance my time [between the law firm and the association’s activities] because finally it is going to help not only the [independently practicing] AORs but AORs who are working in law firms as well,” she commented.

Gore said that the association will focus on the following agenda in its current term:

Case filing counters in the Supreme Court, which are not sufficient in number, should be increases to twice their number

AORs should be notified of the next day’s listed cases, on their email, sufficiently in advance, instead of the current practice of sending them the “office report” only by 830pm or 9pm on the evening before the matter is listed

AORs should be issued an SC “proximity card” which distinguishes them from the other lawyers in the SC – every lawyer in the SC is issued a proximity card. A proximity card with the AOR enrolment ID of an AOR will potentially speed things up for them at places such as filing counters, the library, etc.

AORs should have a special research library also, in addition to the regular library for SC lawyers

More chamber space should be allotted to AORs since they have more filing and administrative work than other SC lawyers

Advocates who have been AORs for 20 years should be automatically designated senior advocates, bypassing the existing process for senior designations

Some quota should exist for AORs in judicial appointments

Gore said that Chief Justice of India TS Thakur has already identified potential land in the Supreme Court’s adjoining Pragati Maidan, for additional chamber allotment to AORs, and that the registry has been “very receptive” to the demand for sufficient advance notification of listed matters to AORs.
