BCI to catch Tamil Nadu bar leaders with 'ulterior motive' behaving in 'most irresponsible manner'

The Bar Council of India (BCI) asked the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to identify lawyers in the state boycotting courts to protest the proposed disciplinary amendments to Advocates Act rules, and to submit a list of such lawyers to the BCI by today, reported the PTI.

The BCI has “warned” Tamil Nadu lawyers that it would initiate disciplinary action against those who use boycott to try to avert the disciplinary rules amendments proposed by the Madras high court, by which advocates indulging in “serious misconduct” can be debarred.

After the frequent incidents of violence and misbehaviour in the Tamil Nadu bar the Madras high court had proposed amendments to disciplinary rules under the Advocates Act 1961, to punish errant lawyers with possible debarment from advocates’ rolls, but after protests followed from the bar the high court withdrew its proposal.

"...Such action cannot be tolerated. The action of these so-called leaders of Bar Associations makes it apparent they are acting with some ulterior motive. Some of the representatives of a few Bar Associations are acting and behaving in most irresponsible manner, and, in fact, this is a clear case of misconduct", stated a communique from the BCI
