The Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) has detained Bar Council of India (BCI) elected member Rajendra Singh Rana allegedly for taking bribes to accredit a Ghaziabad-based law college, reported the Press Trust of India (PTI).

The CBI reportedly arrested Rana and another person yesterday night, although Rana claimed that he was not arrested but only detained for questioning.

PTI wrote:

The CBI had been monitoring the telephone calls of Rajendra Singh Rana and swooped on his Pitampura residence in north Delhi late in the evening when another advocate had arrived there with the file of the law college.

The agency claimed to have recovered over Rs one lakh from his residence and soon after he was detained, simultaneous searches were carried out at seven places in and around Delhi including the Law College, official sources said.

Speaking to PTI while in the custody of the CBI headquarters, Rana alleged that the agency was deliberately trying to trap him and that he was discussing the case with his fellow Supreme Court Advocate whom he identified as "Tyagi".

While he claimed that both of them had been brought to the CBI headquarters for questioning and were only detained, the CBI sources maintained that he has been arrested and a case of bribery registered against him.

PTI did not name the law college that had allegedly paid the bribe.
