RMLNLU student’s custodial death | Law min to add 4 ASG posts | Ex-Singhania joins Kochhar projects | Delhi & Madras lawyers strike | SEBI opens in Jaipur | NLUO new campus

RMLNLU Lucknow student Satnam Singh Mann dies three days into judicial custody after he was arrested from a religious mutt in Kerala on 2 August 2012. Mann was charged with attempt to murder after a police official allegedly suffered injuries while trying to block Mann from “creating panic” at the Mata Amritanandamayi mutt. He was remanded to 14 days in judicial custody but on showing signs of mental disturbance, he was shifted out, first to a local mental asylum, and then to an asylum in a different district, where he died on Saturday night. The police registered a case of unnatural death.
However, the two asylums gave contradictory statements about the presence of injury marks on Mann’s body. Mann’s brother maintains that his body was injury-less when he was in judicial custody, but Mann’s dead body in the asylum was covered with injury marks. A magisterial inquiry suggested that the 30 injury marks on Mann’s body indicated torture by hand, as well as wood or iron rods. Kerala BJP called for a “high level probe” to be started to look into the “mysterious death” of Mann who hailed from Bihar [Daily Pioneer / Facebook page Justice for Satnam]
