GNLU: A preview/ An Insider's account!

 Email  Facebook  Tweet  Linked-in

So you gave CLAT and got through to Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar.

Congratulations!

I am sure you'll have a hundred questions about the University. You might even be considering whether to choose GNLU over some other University. Well, I hope this post helps you in deciding.

I’ll try to summarise what all things you can expect from the place.

Location:

Gandhinagar is Gujarat’s capital. It’s a very green city. Amazing roads. No traffic. If you are someone who likes the hustle-bustle of Mumbai then you’ll find the place boring. Gujarat has prohibition, something I think all of us know about. There are no night clubs in Gandhinagar. There are very few good restaurants but that can be managed by going to Ahmedabad which is just 30 minutes away. If you are someone who likes peace and serenity then Gandhinagar is the place for you. Transport is relatively cheap. People of Gujarat are famous for their friendly behaviour and their helping attitude. Girls can roam around safely. We have a 9:30pm curfew time for the college hostel which is good enough because there is hardly anything open in Gandhinagar post 10pm.

Campus:

The campus is still under construction. We stay in the old campus of NIFT. Students joining this year can expect to spend 4 years out of 5 in the new 45 acre campus. The new campus is sexy. It will be among the best in the country. Although, the current campus is not too bad either. We have arguably, the best hostels amongst law schools in the country. Almost all our requirements are easily met in this current campus. But then, as Seth Godin says, “Good is not great.” :)

Faculty:

Okay this is a toughie. I think I can safely say, like all NLUs and I think Universities in general, we have the excellent, the good and the ugly. A few teachers are amazing. They will literally make you want to attend class. Sometimes, when you have a free class and that faculty is teaching in some other class, you’d want to go and attend that other class. Yea, they are that good. Some of them are okay okay. We can’t call them good or bad. They are in-between. Personally I feel that faculties are only there to guide you where to go. Legal Education should mostly be self learning.

Students:

The best part about GNLU is the variety of students that we have. The year I joined I was told that GNLu has students from 26 states now. We are a diverse crowd. We have had it even before IDIA started working on it. :P Students are helping. There are 160 odd students per batch so there will be a lot of people you’ll get along with and learn from. The students are the elements which make a university. Shri Jairam Ramesh will be happy to see that even though right now GNLU is not the country’s best law school, the students are right up there. :) Seniors are very helpful. They will make you feel right at home from the very first day. There is almost no ragging. Everything done is in good humour and will be enjoyable for the new student as well. Nothing outward happens. GNLU students appreciate talent. People will look at you with respect if you can sing, dance, play a instrument, are a good orater, can play CS like you are invincible, can write notes even during boring classes, have a good sense of humour, are a foodie or just have a good collection of movies/sitcoms. :D

Placements:

Yes, this is what everyone thinks is the most important way to judge a University. I disagree. Contrary to popular opinion, GNLU has a very good placement record. If we see Legally India statistics for this year’s placement then we can see that 73 GNLU students have been placed in reputed places. The batch had 145 odd students. So after 73 there are 145-73= 72 students left. GNLU is, according to me, one of the very few law schools in India which sends a lot of students to litigation. That’s what NLUs were set up to do, right? I can safely say that out of the 72 students left, 30 to 35 join litigation. So that leaves only 35 odd students. We have 20 students who are going to pursue further studies in prestigious institutions in India and abroad. That leaves only 15 students. Who knows, maybe some of these 15 have been placed somewhere after the latest LI update on the recruitment page. I am not sure. 10% of a batch not getting their desired placement is normal. The fact that GNLU has 150 plus students in a normal batch makes it even more difficult for the college to place all of them. Amarchand Mangaldas took 15 students this year still that would only be 10% of the batch. Imagine if GNLU had 80 odd students and Amarchand took 15. It would change the situation completely. So don’t just blindly follow statistics. Consider all the parameters. If you are a good student and you do decently in academics then you’ll get a job irrespective of which law school you join.

So this is a brief overview of GNLU. Please be sure that this is not everything about GNLU. It’s just a basic outline. Ask specific questions to know more.

I won’t tell you what I think is GNLU’s rank is in the country’s top law universities because frankly it doesn’t matter. No one gives a damn about the ranking yet people fight over it. I am personally against giving so much importance to Moots. MPL is a good way to judge a college’s mooting prowess but not enough to judge a college. So don’t read too much into it. Visit the college website for more details.

I am a fourth year student of GNLU. If you are someone who got through and wants more details then send me a message on my LI account or post your facebook account link in the comments, I’ll ping you.

Don’t ask me if you should GNLu over HNLU or NLU-J or NLU-Bhopal or NLU-D or any such thing. Every college has its positives and negatives. Choose wisely and then stick to it. Stop cribbing once you get into college, you got what you deserved.

P.S. – I’ll try answering all genuine queries that any one of you have in your mind. Post it in the comments.

Don’t judge a book by its cover or price, a person by his/her clothes/accent, a law student by his laptop/CGPA and a law school from its website/campus/MPL rank/India Today or Outlook rank.” – This is an original Napster quote. :P

All the best to everyone. I hope you have fun in law school because in the end, that's all that matters. :)

Jai Hind!

Lol ........... Does one actually need to do a lot of work on laptop in an Indian law School ?? ( Well , i thought most of the work is Manual , and laptops are just needed for using internet )
Well , Sir this is a genuine doubt .

i am honestly against the idea of this ranking practice. it plays no other role other than to make the recruiters biased when it comes to hiring students :(

Hey. We use our laptops for everything.
From writing assignments, to watching the latest episode of our favourite TV shows.
Also, unless you have a BB, you need your laptop constantly for emails. Because you get tons of emails from college authorities, professors and students. It's the biggest tool of communication you see.
Quite a big deal to be accommodating 145 odd people man! Especially in a make shift campus! What about your mess food and other facilities? Prospective students always ask such questions!

Kian: Thanks :)

#2: Welcome :)

#3: Yes sir. A laptop is close to a necessity now a days. I am talking both for entertainment and academics. All projects are printed. All faculties use powerpoint presentations so the students need a computer to go through them before exams.

#4: I agree.

#5: Consider the fact that there are 150 odd students per batch. Close to 750 students total. It's a madhouse sometimes.

Mess food might not be tasty but it sure is hygienic. It's tough to figure out a particular taste that everyone likes. This becomes even more difficult when the college has students from all over the country. But I can assure you that you won't fall sick because of it and there will be atleast one meal per day that you will like. :)

@ Napster --- I understand that you want the cream to join GNLU. But let me divulge the truth about mooting in GNLU first. People GNLU is the only NLU in the country which has this lousy rule that you cant moot once you have a back in any subject, be it attendance or academic and consequently many bright students don't get to moot for one year atleast. The MCC is filled with politics and students are more concerned about travelling abroad than winning the moot. This year's Vis team was like a BIG Boss challenge. :P.... trust me no one can stop you from getting a back unless you can butter the faculty. Apart from this, another sad thing is you really cant talk against Modi or the gujarat govt. only after coming to Gujarat and GNLU i realized that Modi is literally worshiped. The biggest turn off is the huge domicile population which is filled with fools and route learners who are often the toppers as well because all you need to top is memorize the notes and slides and Bangia is the bible for the Domicile crowd. Mess food....hahahah....Mr. Bimal N Patel has banned non- veg in the mess...because he feels that non- vegetarianism is against the tenets of gujarati culture . May be he failed to understand that he is the VC of a National Law School not Gujarati University. People the fact is ... many students want to stand up against these arbitrary practices but GNLU is again an NLU without a student bar body, which means that the students have no say at all.

Hey Did u forgot to mention the number of C.S it has been producing. i went the Noida C.S office for admit Card( u need to get it attested and i was interning in delhi so knew no one who can do the same) and you won't believe what he said, he said " GNLU is the Law school having highest number of C.S registration and most of them are passing in their 1st attempt :O this made my work more easy ;) but it is the beauty of quantity :O brings out big magical Nummmbbeeersss ;)

Its fucking hot over there.
And away from the whole world. I always believe law schools/educational institutions prosper better if they are in the main part of the city. NUJS benefits from this, but other law school students suffer the same problem.

#7: I am glad you decided to speak up. I must tell you that you are either a student of GNLU who is frustrated due to reasons that I don't know or a very good friend of a GNLU student who is frustrated because of reasons I don't know.

Firstly, Mooting is not everything. No one gives you a job if you have done 2 good moots but have failed to clear 3 subjects. The 'no moot if you have a back' rule is because the least the university can expect a student to do is pass all subjects. I personally don't 'butter up' a faculty, neither do a lot of other students. But guess what? A lot of us pass and that too with good marks. You didn't? Awww!!

Your views about the MCC may or may not be genuine. I am not in the MCC so I don't know. I don't think you have the right to accuse teams of being below class. Everything was done within the rules and so every student got a chance to go for VIS. Not everyone is great at mooting. Normal people like us sometimes don't succeed in the first attempt but we learn from the experience.

I agree that 25% domicile is a lot but then the relationship with the state government has to be mutual. If they give you land for free and a lot of money to run the University and keep the fees down then I think that the domicile is justified. And not like GNLU is the only place with domicile. It's a pretty common thing.

You have a problem with students people who just memorize stuff and get good marks? then go talk to Mr Kapil Sibal and change the education system. It's a problem with the system and not with the University.

Yes, non-veg food was banned. No reason was given so you assumed the reason was gujarati culture. From what I have heard, the reason is that the mess guy could not find good quality chicken at reasonable rates so instead of increasing the mess fees they decided to change the menu. Seems reasonable to me.

GNLU does not have a student body, agreed. I don't think you need one. It's a subjective thing. You are entitled to your opinion.

About Narendra Modi and the Government of Gujarat, you are so wrong my friend. I have been a part of heated debates about these topics. GNLU is an open place. We respect your right to have an opinion even though we might not agree to your opinion. :)

Shoot some more misconceptions, its better if everything clears out.

#8: Yes I agree. A lot of GNLU students give the C.S. exam. Majority of them have successfully cleared it as well. I don't have the stats. Maybe Kian can find out something on this :)

#9: I agree about the heat. It's a bummer when you want to go for a walk or something. This even after being surrounded by trees. Just imagine. :| I think we'll be closer to Ahmedabad when the new campus starts. That will solve a lot of problems. :)

Why the shame #13?

Is a Student Bar so important?

What if your University takes care of all major problems? What if individual complaints from students are actually heard?

See, not everyone can be kept happy. There will always be a few who crib. Look at #7 for example. :P But I think that GNLU administration is doing a decent enough job to keep the majority of the students happy.

Haven't you read anything about having a union in a factory, its merits and demerits? Well, the same applies to Universities.

Why have a Bar when you can function well without it?

GNLU has no facilities. We have equipment but we go to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to play and practice. All our competitions are held there. Although we do have a ground in the hostel area which is used for volleyball, badminton, throwball and stuff. We have an intra college fest named "Pentagram'. Oh boy, five days of super fun. We have lots of activities.

If you are willing to put in a little effort, you'll never get bored :)

Sports is really cumin up in GNLU. We've participated in a lot of sport fests and have won in a few sports...(Few bcoz we rarely practice as we don't have proper facilities yet) With the New Campus and its ground we plan to have more events in the Intra-Sports Meet-Justice League...and we will probably start having a Inter-college Sports Fest from the 2012....also apart from Pentagram GNLU regularly participates in IIM A's Chaos which is at d most 2nd only to Mood-I of IIT-Powai...

It's huge. You should watch a Manutd Liverpool Match at the hostel mess sometime. The football culture is amazing, We've
what we call the GFL which happens in one semester (11 a side league with transfers and everything) and futsal in the other semester (5 a side street football competition) with loads of teams participating. So if football is your thing, you'll find your niche here !

And dont worry about ragging. I see you're an arsenal supporter. You'll have enough arsenal fans to bail you out :P

Very objective. :) Being from there, let me tell you there's a lot to improve upon but also a ton to appreciate. So you can crib and whine and feel awful or chin up at look at what we have going for us. Yes some things are a bummer:
No non veg food.
No nightclubs.
PROHIBITION.
The VC has his heart in the right place but really needs to stop being so standoffish. We NEED a student body.
But we also have:
The best hostels. :)
A bangin' new campus coming right up!
Safe and clean city (village, whatever! :P)
Nice seniors and a decent crowd.
Freedom to choose your pace at law school.

I really loved this!! Thanks a lot..It really makes any of the national law school feel worth it. When we start with prep for the CLAT, most of us go with an attitude that we won't settle for anything less than the top 3 law schools..(not realizing the level of competition we will be facing and that we may not make it to the top in spite of being very good) and as a result we don't do enough research about the other law schools. The the other law schools don't get enough publicity too. Unless one knows someone from these law schools we have no idea about the life in these colleges...! So thanks again! :)

the only thing i love about GNLU is football culture over here.. there is not only Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool fan rivalry but also Outlaws F.C., Pirate F.C. rivalry (GFL).. I completely hate Moot Court Committee (the most biased committee you will ever find, bunch of retards who think they know everything). MCC has single handedly destroyed the quality and standard of mooting in GNLU.. Also VC sends you to court visits and its seriously a waste of time.. Mess food sucks big time.. Faculty don't even ask..

hey guys...good post and comments... while you have been objective to most comments and ur description of teh college seems balanced, just slightly open up to taking criticism... on that note you must realize that it is not the purpose of a student council to only keep students happy (which as per you the teachers there are doing a good job of it)... it is important for such a body to exist as some form of a student representative body to the policy makers of your college... more than anything it teaches you a lot about policy making in a univeristy, building consensus and ofcourse the most democratic way of puting sudents' suggestion forward... so while you may be content (or are kidding/convincing yourself) that u dont have a student council, you must take this issue up objectively as students of the university with your vc and get this started... It helps improve the culture as well (even though it has a big downside if increasing politics)
