Maharashtra’s second National Law University (NLU) would get its permanent campus in the coastal town ofUttan in Mumbai’s Thane district [reportedDNA]
The plot finalized for the new building is adjacent to the Maharashtra Judicial Academy in Uttan. The NLU has been forced to operate from other institutes because of lack of space for almost half a year. It is currently operating at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Deonar, ever since it was forced to vacate the Ismail Yusuf (IY) College in Jogeshwari .
The report claims that even two years ago, the government had proposed to house NLU at Uttan but the plan couldn’t materialize as the authorities at NLU wanted a campus closer to the city.
Dr Sanjay Chahande, principal secretary of the Higher and Technical Education Department, confirmed and was quoted, “We are currently in the process of finalising the land deal at Uttan,” and refused to elaborate any further, saying that the issue has already been “dragged in too much controversy”.
NLU Mumbai had begun taking admissions this year.
The green light had also been given by the Maharashtra government for a national law school in Nagpur and Aurangabad, but thereappears to have been little progress other than identifying land in March.
