Majmudar & Partner senior associates Tejus Cherian and Vinod Kamath left the firm in April to start up corporate law firm CK Juris in Bangalore in June.
CK Juris, which currently operates with a team of three lawyers including partners Cherian and Kamath, from Cunningham Road, will focus on corporate M&A, employment and real estate work.
Cherian did his LLB in 2002 from Bangalore University and his ML in 2004 from Madras University, worked at Fox Mandal until 2006 and then joined Majmudar.
Kamath did his LLB in 2001 from Mangalore University and his LLM from Mysore University in 2003 and worked at Krish & Kolloth, Dr Kainth & Associates and Fox Mandal before joining Majmudar in 2006.
Cherian said that the start-up currently has clients from the IT sector and the pharma industry, some real estate clients, and is also helping foreign companies in setting up subsidiaries in India which will instruct the firm on future work after setting up here. He added that work for the firm was flowing from personal contacts between Cherian and Kamath developed from around 15 years of living in Bangalore.
“Starting up was a plan somewhere down the line. But I think now it’s the time of change in the country [with the new government] and also for us to change from a personal standpoint,” he said.
“I am sure there is going to be lots of [competition] but the activity levels are going to increase with the change in government and we will be practically targeting that rush, and expanding to look at overseas marketing as well.”
