NLU Delhi hired 10 new teachers in 2012-13, including 8 national law school alums

NLU Delhi added five full time faculty, two visiting professors and three research associates to its teaching staff this academic year taking its total faculty strength to 44, while continuing the drive to recruit young faculty by offering salaries more attractive to foreign university LLM holders.

In the last 12 months that college has hired visiting professors Prof (Dr) A Jayagovind and Prof K Seetharaman, and former Punjab University professor Dr Anupama Goel and Dr Mrinal Satish as associate professors.

Chinmayi Arun, Aparna Chandra and Anup Surendranath, all of whom have undergraduate degrees from Indian law schools and LLMs from foreign universities, joined as assistant professors; three graduates from national law schools and overseas LLM-holders - Mois Tundavala, Pratyush Kumar and Neha Singhal - joined as research assistants. (see table for details below)

NLU Delhi vice chancellor Ranbir Singh said that the college was looking to recruit more teachers from the “young crowd” as “traditional” faculty was less comfortable with newer subjects such as competition law, energy law, trade law and others.

The college decided to renegotiate the pay of its foreign educated faculty after it was sanctioned a Rs 8 crore central grant by the University Grants Commission (UGC) alongside other national law schools, Legally India reported in February. However, no pay hikes have been announced yet, said an NLU Delhi faculty member.

Singh commented: “[The salary hike] should be done in the 12th plan. The UGC has already approved it in principle, we are just looking at ways to implement it.” It is understood that the aim will be to bring salary levels close to those of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) teachers.

Justice JS Verma was chair professor in professional ethics at NLU Delhi, until he passed away on Monday.

The former Chief Justice of India (CJI) had laid the foundation for stronger laws against sexual harassment of and violence against women, first through his landmark Vishakha judgement in the Supreme Court in 1997, and in January this year when a panel headed by him submitted 630 pages of recommendations for amendments in criminal laws.

Legally India is currently in the process of collecting faculty hire information from other colleges too. Please let us know if you’ve heard anything interesting in the meantime.
