Symbi wins Kerala-LA moot | NLU-J to fight in ICC quarters | Indian teams bested at DMH, GIMC | NUJS MPL 3rd

MPL 4: The home of Indian mooting
MPL 4: The home of Indian mooting

Slim pickings for Indian teams this mooting weekend, as none managed to beat their foreign rivals in Mumbai and Gandhinagar. But Symbiosis won its first MPL 4 moot in Kerala, and NLU Jodhpur will face Vanderbilt Law School from the US this afternoon in the quarter finals of the ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition [Check official ICC Twitter feed for live updates]

Update: NLU Jodhpur lost to Vanderbilt, meaning all Indian teams are now out of the ICC mediation competition.

Kerala Law Academy Moot (Symbiosis Pune v. NLU Delhi)

Symbiosis Law School Pune won against NLU Delhi in the finals of the Kerala Law Academy (KLA) moot held from 7 to 9 February. With the win Symbiosis bagged its first gold of MPL Season 4 and jumped to 13th place from 26th.

NLSIU Bangalore and HNLU Raipur finished as semifinalists in the moot.

The winning Symbiosis team consisted of speakers Neeati Narayan, Shayan Das Gupta and researcher Indraneel Gunjal.

The members of the NLU Delhi team were Parul Sharma, Paramavir Singh and Vinay Pilania. The best speaker award was grabbed by Prateek Mahajan of UILS Punjab and Dhatri KS of Nuals Kochi was awarded best female speaker.

However, points are only awarded for the best speaker citation, because female speakers are also eligible to win that category.

Nuals Kochi took home the MPL points for the best memorandum.

Symbiosis’ Narayan was thrilled about her win: “I’m very happy about this victory. In fact this is the second moot that I’m doing and the second moot I’m winning. We really worked for more than a month and had made thorough preparation for the moot.”

“The quality of judging should be really appreciated. The judges we had in the finals were the best I’ve ever come across. All our opponents were very tough to crack and the rounds we had with JamiaMilia was the toughest. The organisers deserve a special mention because I find that the moot was such a success as a result of the students’ effort.”

A. Sreehari the convener of the moot commented that “the moot was good and fruitful and another successful edition with a bunch of very talented teams”.

GIMC

National University of Singapore (NUS) won this year’s edition of the GNLU International Moot Court Competition against NLSIU Bangalore, taking the Indian college to over 200 points for the first time this MPL season.

A total of 42 teams participated in the competition between 7 and 10 February from India and abroad at GNLU Gandhinagar, competing about a trade dispute between two nations over products containing toxic levels of lead.

National University of Singapore’s Teo Christin won the overall best speaker tropy, and the award for the best written submission went to the team from GLC Mumbai. The other semi-finalists were RMNLU Lucknow and Amity Law School Delhi (IP University).

NLSIU Bangalore, with this performance, has completed its double century in this year’s edition of the Mooting Premier League (MPL) sponsored by Herbert Smith Freehills. NLSIU gained 8 MPL points taking its tally with its KLA points to a whopping 209 points, continuing to sit at the top of the MPL 4 table.

GLC Mumbai also gained 8 points, taking it to ninth position from its previous 10th. Amity Law School Delhi (IP University) moved up three places to the 22nd position with 4 points, and is now right behind its sister institute Amity Law School Noida in 21st.

GNLU earned 2 points as the GIMC Moot organiser, climbing one spot to 11th.

The moot was liveblogged by GNLU’s Aiswarya Mohapatra and Arvind Ravindranath.

GLC Mumbai, DM Harish International Moot (Valparaiso v. New York University)

ILS Pune and NUJS Kolkata lost out in the semi finals of the DM Harish Memorial International Moot.

However, RGNUL Patiala won the best memorandum award and Zubin Dash of NUJS Kolkata was the best orator of the moot.

NUJS climbed to third position in the MPL rankings from fifth with its citations in GLC World Class Tier 2 moot.

Valparaiso beat New York University in the finals of the competition. The Valparaiso team comprised of Megan Ieffelman, Katherina Walker and Lakshmi Jayanthi.

The moot consisted of five rounds: the preliminary round was followed by octa finals, quarters, semis and finals. According to the competition rules, the 16 teams that qualified for the octa-finals of this edition will have an automatic confirmation of their slot the next time the moot is held.

This year, the DM Harish moot saw a total participation of 26 teams and was liveblogged on Legally India by the organising committee.

Kerala Law Academy and GLC Mumbai are not eligible for MPL organiser points as both colleges also participated in the moot.

International law firm Herbert Smith is sponsoring the Mooting Premier League (MPL) and will contribute a prize pool of Rs 60,000 for the top three winning colleges.
