Chawla: Back to rootsChawla: Back to roots Former Amarchand Mangaldas senior partner Harry Chawla has joined his former firm Kochhar & Co as its lead partner in Mumbai, though it is understood he will spend most of his time in Delhi.

Chawla had left Amarchand in December, as first reported by Legally India at the time.

Kochhar’s Mumbai office of 13 lawyers, which had suffered several senior defections in the last year, was headed by partner Rupali Sharma before Chawla’s joining and also includes one other partner, according to a Kochhar spokesperson.

Kochhar and Chawla did not return Legally India’s calls and messages for comment since last week.

Legal website Bar & Bench reported Chawla’s move today and quoted him as saying: “The role and position that Rohit Kochhar described was pretty challenging and I thought I was up to it and I took it on. Also, given the relationship we have shared in the past, there was no reason to say no to his offer.”

After graduating in 1990 from Kurukshetra University, Chawla had been at Kochhar & Co before joining Luthra & Luthra in 1995, leaving in 2000 to start his own firm Chawla & Co with several associates. He had merged his practice with Amarchand in 2008.

Kochhar managing partner Rohit Kochhar told Bar & Bench: “If you really want to change the destiny of an organisation then I think a law firm like ours would provide a better platform to someone as senior as Harminder (as I call him) to come on board and play that destiny-shaping role than, may be, in his previous firm.”

Chawla was an executive committee member and equity partner of Amarchand’s Delhi office.

Why do these guys give quotes and speak to Bar and Bench but refuse to speak to Legally India? WHY WHY WHY? May be because LI encourages mean and nasty gossip and BarandBench reports appropriately.

Legally India is no more but like a B grade movie. When people go for such movies - it all about whistles and hooting. Same is the case of LI - they do some skin show (they make the subject matter kinda naked or controversial) and lawyers across the board comment. In toto - LI sucks big time!

Why what is ur problem? If a poor lawyer sitting in Noida can run international practice in London and an international lawyer sitting in London can run one of India's largest law firm based in Noida, then why not a person can run practice in Mumbai out of Delhi? given the capabilities of Harry, i do not have any doubts!

I am not raising any issues re Harry's capabilities- but there is a big difference from running a Noida practice out of London (which I presume is for reasons of restriction on practice) and running a Mumbai practice out of Delhi. I guess Kocchar did not get a capable Mumbai lawyer to do that- about how tough it is, ask Mohit Saraf...

Any idea why left the position of an equity partner in AMSS to join kocchar?I am sure with his reputation, even the other biggies would have jumped at the thought of having him in their firm!

use of phrases like 'change the destiny' & 'destiny shaping' confirms that Mr. Kochhar was at his eloquent best trying to lure harry aka Harminder (as he calls him) back to the kochhar fold but the moot point is that if harry is such a smart lawyer who has worked with RK in the past, how can he not see through RK's penchant for building castles in thin air by his command over the English language. Or perhaps in the 90"s RK was still perfecting that art and harry didn't get a glimpse of it back then!
Anyways, here's hoping it works out for the best for both of them!!

Have you seen the castle he has built on the ground? Surely - that cannot be done merely by having command over the English language.

you bet I have... such castles are built not because of anything (& most certainly not because superior brains or skills, if that's what you are implying) but for a random roll of the dice in one's favour... don't be "fooled by randomness", buddy; it could happen to you too, believe me! it takes maturity and generosity of spirit on the part of a managing partner to say that an individual (other than himself) can shape the desinty of his organization. it is true that individuals change destinies of organizations but most managing partners would rather have one believe they change the destiny of a person by taking them on.

@9 : Dude, "penchant for building castles in thin air by his command over the English language".....kind of sums up what all corporate law firm lawyers do....and then of course you have to pretend that drafting a notice or a memo and sittting & talking crap in meetings is deadly serious stuff! Have seen enought of it....its a load of crap.
