Usha Narayanan: From regulator to regulated

Former Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) executive director Usha Narayanan joined Amarchand Mangaldas Mumbai as of counsel in the general corporate and financial regulatory practice today after she retired from SEBI in June this year, having served with the regulator for 21 years.

Narayanan has 35 years of experience in the financial services industry, according to a press release from the firm. Other than her time at SEBI, she has spent 15 years of her career at Bank of India.

Narayanan was in charge of SEBI’s corporate finance department in her role as executive director at SEBI. She supervised the implementation of policies relating to the issuance of capital, disclosure in offer documents, continuous disclosures, listing requirements, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions and portfolio investment by foreign investors, according to the release.

Before serving as executive director, she held senior positions across various departments at SEBI including primary market, takeover, foreign institutional investors and custodian investigation and market intermediaries.

She was also a member of various committees including the International Organization of Securities Commission’s (IOSCO) Standing Committee on Disclosures & Accounting Standards, the Reserve Bank of India Committee on Conflict of Interest, the High Powered Expert Committee of the Government of India on making Mumbai a Regional Financial Centre and the Government of India Committee to review ADR/ GDR/ FCCB policy.

Presently she is a central council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

Narayanan graduated in law from the Mumbai University, and earned a Masters degree in business laws from NLSIU Bangalore. She also post-graduated in Economics from the Mumbai University.

She retired from SEBI on 29 June, at the age of 58 reported The Hindu Businessline.
