NLSIU Bangalore defeated City University of Hong Kong in the finals of the Asia-Pacific rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law moot on Sunday.
NLSIU Bangalore also won the best memorandum award and took home a total of 50 points from this Tier 2 World Class Mooting Premier League (MPL) moot.
This is the ninth moot win and best memorandum citation for NLSIU Bangalore this season.
NLU Jodhpur and National University of Singapore finished semifinalists in the moot. A student from National University of Singapore won the award for the best speaker. In mid-April, NLSIU Bangalore had defeated Nalsar Hyderabad in the ISRO funding rounds of the moot.
With this final MPL 3 win, which was first reported on Legally India’s MPL Facebook page, NLSIU Bangalore leads the MPL 3 Season Standings with a massive 333 points followed by NLU Jodhpur with 215 points and Nalsar Hyderabad with 186 points.
The NLSIU team consisted of speakers Prem Ayyathurai and Viraj Parikh along with researcher Vinodini Srinivasan.
MPL 3 Quicklinks:
Ayyathurai said that the overall experience of the team was unexpectedly good. “We faced teams from Indonesia, China, Singapore and Hong Kong. Our semi-final round against National University of Singapore (NUS) was the toughest. They had a really good speaker and they were exceptional. But, we had a good memo. In a psychological sense, that round was the finals for us.
“Except for one round, the judging was good in every round. We were quite bored of practising our arguments and saying it again and again. It was worth all the effort when the judges asked us challenging questions.”
When asked about the secret of the NLSIU's mooting success this season, Ayyathurai emphasised the attitude of the NLSIU moot court society (MCS). “This year, we had an MCS which worked quite differently. They really cared about the performance of the teams. After the memorandum submissions in every moot, the MCS put efforts to contact our alumni and organise practice rounds. This personal involvement of the MCS resulted in increased practice sessions which helped us win moots.”
Ayyathurai also acknowledged the role of his seniors. “Our team consisted of first-time mooters and our seniors guided us well.”
The moot was held in Nalsar Hyderabad. Organisers Rahul Nikam and Prarthana confirmed the results and said that 18 teams participated in the moot.
These teams were shortlisted after a memorandum elimination scrutiny. Nalsar Hyderabad will not be awarded MPL organiser points as it participated in the moot.
Ayyathurai praised Nalsar's organising team. “We had five rounds on the first day and all the rounds started on time. The juniors from Nalsar who organised the moot very well.”
The win in Hyderabad means that NLSIU, which has led the MPL with only little contest for most of this season, has built its lead in top position in the MPL this year.

But, when would NLS zoom past the top 20 in the world ?
lets embark on this discussion ..?
So even though the students are bright and hard working, the numerous issues in status quo stand as a hindrance.
I am not claiming that we would zoom past the top twenty in the world, but relatively stand more recognized than we are today.
NLU-J lost in the semi-finals and went thru becoz f memo else d oralists were not good wen compared to der oralists marks overall... so pls...
Saw d memo n know hw it ws.. nywys congo bt evrythng wnt wrng i guess in semis.. bt stl congo
Dude we are not taking about this one moot, Just look at the overall performance. if we talk about the speaker than FYI these NLUJ people won Stetson bcs of the speaking...so just chill
hey man,
im the researcher from the team.
i have the score sheet for the prelims with me with team codes.
lets see how great you did.
whoever you are.
did they face you? I'd like to know what came of that round.
Many take the civil or judicial service examination and some even apot for journalism.
Besides you will not see half of NLS grads as they are placed abroad. 10% of Nalsar and NUJS are in foreign firms and other sizable chunks are in AMSS and Luthra where the number of NLIU grads are less (no prizes for guessing why).
Plus you will see a lot of start ups from these univs example, PXV, Verus, etc. Not many come from NLIU.
But I will give credit to NLIU students for being good at man management. They know exactly how to make their seniors and colleagues feel comfortable and important all the time which in turn helps them in enjoying a comfortable working environment without too much of work pressure as compared to their batchmates from other NLUs and still remain in good books.
Do we really call this talent?
And how exactly is attrition rate connected to mooting?

So much for NLSUI quality.
