Making friends is important and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) seems keen to.
The fledgling Indian anti-trust regulator seems to have listened attentively to much of the feedback from industry and competition lawyers, toning down the text of its merger control regulations with a number of welcome exemptions. C-Day is 1 June.
In the Supreme Court politics is never far away – quite literally since many advocates also moonlight as politicians – and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections are always an event. This year, SCBA veteran PH Parekh defeated the incumbent Ram Jethmalani and another contender in a tight race.
The winner, PH Parekh, rejected Jethmalani’s arguments, supporting the result as fair; the election commission will meet tomorrow to decide.
The Delhi Bar Council received a nod for hereditary succession from the Delhi High Court.
And two of India’s biggest cases of the decade so far, ran into judicial roadblocks at the apex court: a bench stayed the earlier high court partition of the controversial Ayodhya site, calling the ruling that was laden with pragmatism ‘strange’.
And the Supreme Court also decided it could not reinstate harsher criminal charges in the Union-Carbide Bhopal Gas tragedy, although earlier the trial court could have examined the point. What now?
Similarly, not much luck in the Supreme Court for the anti-Bar Exam petitions that have been all but abandoned and could still be another half-year before they are heard.
Also this week, Rajani Associates has reportedly entered into a tie-up short of a best friendship with an Australian firm.
While some might interpret this as good news for Indo-Anywhere best friend arrangements in general, this one very definitely does not look like a best friendship and is more likely to amount to little more than a cross-marketing and PR of brands in respective jurisdictions at this point.
And despite the recent influx of international law firms to Oz, this is unlikely to be hurting referrals into India.
In the Mooting Premier League sponsored by Allen & Overy meanwhile, the scores for one of the world’s top moots are now in and NLU Jodhpur emerged as the biggest winner of points.
Finally, if you are a lawyer or journalist in the Bombay or Delhi High Court or in the Supreme Court and love to write, let us know: we are looking for part-time correspondents.
