The Bombay High Court was granted six new judges today to hit 61 sitting judges out of a quota of 75.
Six new additional judges have been appointed to the Bombay High Court including district court judges M L Tahaliyani and A M Thipsay who respectively sentenced terrorist Kasab and the Best Bakery blast accused, and South Goa principal district judge UV Bhakre who was at the heart of a local sessions judge suspension row.
The new appointees in order of seniority are former principal district judge of Nagpur T V Nalawade followed by ex-registrar general of Bombay High Court M N Gilani, principal district and session judge of Pune M T Joshi, district court judge Madanlal Laxmandas Tahaliyani, district court judge Abhay Mahadeo Thipsay and South Goa principal district and session judge U V Bakre, according to the Press Information Bureau.
In February Goa lawyers went on strike to protest the suspension of a district judge, who they say was ousted for making an unpopular judgment in disposing of one murder charge in a serial killer case. Bakre had reported the judge to the High Court, according to PTI and lawyers who were unhappy and boycotted Bakre’s court.
Each of the newly selected judges would serve a tenure of two years except for Gilani. The Bombay High Court that has appellate jurisdiction over courts in Maharashtra and Goa has benches at Aurangabad, Nagpur, Panaji (Goa).
The Bombay High Court has a sanctioned strength of 75 judges, with the latest intake bringing the figure to 61 judges.
