Khaitan & Co's recent White & Case lateral hire has advised Reliance Industries and Infotel Broadband Services on a $500m loan to finance its broadband wireless access (BWA) auction win. Linklaters and Juris Corp advised the lead lender RBS.

Khaitan & Co partner Shishir Mehta led the team for Reliance and Infotel. He had recently joined the firm's Mumbai office as a partner after four years with White & Case in New York to start up a specialist banking and finance practice.

Juris Corp partner Sonali Sharma advised RBS on Indian law aspects, while Linklaters Singapore partner Philip Badge and counsel Aditya Shroff advised on international aspects.

Mehta, who is qualified in New York, England & Wales and India, commented: "This deal is a very good example of how we have been able to provide enhanced value to our clients by leveraging on the international experience of our lawyers."

Internet provider Infotel won BWA spectrum from the government in 22 areas in June for around $2.85bn but was shortly afterwards acquired by Reliance Industries for $3.8bn.

The commercial borrowing arranged by RBS will be used to part-finance the BWA spectrum acquisition cost.
