Sondhi targets Delhi Bar Council vice-chairmanship in Monday vote

Elections to the executive posts of the Delhi Bar Council will be held on Monday at 4.15 pm in the High Court office of the Bar Council of Delhi, after having been pulled earlier this month due to "illegality and irregularity" charges against the election committee members.

K K Sareen and Rakesh Tiku are contesting for the post of chairman and Luthra & Luthra partner Vijay Sondhi and Jaiveer Nagar are the candidates fighting for the post of vice-chairman.

Member delegate to the Bar Council of India will be chosen out of two incumbent aspirants Puneet Mittal and Rajinder Singh Rana.

Former Bar Council of India chairman Ved Prakash Sharma said: "We will continue to play a positive role and contribute towards the upliftment of the legal community. We shall extend full support and cooperation to the new executive council."

There will also be an election to select members to seven committees including three disciplinary committees.

The other committees are the library committee (3 members), rules committee (5), enrolment committee (3), executive committee (5), indigent and disabled lawyers committee (5), three disciplinary committees (2 members each) and Bar Council of India advocates welfare committee for the state (2).

The executive committee election was originally due to be held in early February but was cancelled on 5 February following allegations of 13 Bar Council members that five Delhi Bar Council election committee members wanted to contest for posts that they were mandated to oversee the election for.

Protracted negotiations for the top spots have been ongoing since January.

Nomination papers were to be filed between dates 11 February 2010 to 15 February 2010. They were allowed to be withdrawn until 17 February 2010.

In 2004 K K Sareen had been selected to serve as the Chairman of Bar Council of Delhi after outvoting his rival B S Rana.

Next to Sondhi, the other candidate for vice-chairmanship is Jaiveer Nagar, who is also the youngest member of the Council, a member of the All India Congress Committee and a former chief of the Delhi Youth Congress.

Nagar has been the temporary chairman for the past month, while Rajesh Mishra was appointed to serve as temporary secretary and Sondhi was given charge of the enrolment committee until the final selection.
