School of Excellence in Law (SOEL), Chennai has beaten Symbiosis Society Law College, Pune in the finals of the Nani Palkhiwala National Tax Moot Court Competition held by Government Law College (GLC) Mumbai on Saturday.

The winning team from SOEL Chennai comprised of Prithviraj N Shankar, P J Sriganesh and B Arun Raghavan.

Prabhjot Chabra from Symbiosis Pune won the best orator ensuring the entry of Symbiosis in the league table at a strong tenth place.

Nalsar Hyderabad won the best memorial award, which puts Nalsar just 3 points behind NLSIU Bangalore for the lead in the Mooting Premier League.

The winning and runner-up teams received cash prizes and an opportunity to intern with Economic Laws Practice or Nishith Desai Associates.

The moot was organized by GLC, Mumbai in association with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Bar Association and the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) between 3 and 5 December.

The finals were judged by three sitting judges of the Bombay High Court. The problem was an ITAT appeal over the taxability of income of two non residents before the Bombay High Court.

Pranay Agarwal, general secretary of the Moot Court Association of GLC Mumbai, said: "This was the sixth edition of the moot court competition which specializes in taxation law. The participants were to argue at ITAT, Mumbai thus giving a real life taxation litigation experience."

He also added that "the finals were judged by the Judges of the Bombay High Court who sit in taxation matters thereby ensuring the best judging possible for taxation moots."

Shankar of the winning SOEL Chennai team said: "It has been a pleasant journey of over two months from the intra-university challenger rounds to winning the finals."

He said that they had carried out the majority of their research from college library materials and online resources.

SOEL Chennai's Sriganesh said he was pleased with the organisation of the moot and added: "The judging was excellent and was good to argue before real life judges."

Pranay Kapoor of Christ Law College, Bangalore won the second best orator.

In other news, the Tier 4 CIAC Arbitration Moot which was to be organised by RMNLU Lucknow has been cancelled for the time being.

We are also still getting final confirmation of the Surana Trial Advocacy North rounds but have been unable to get final confirmation from the organisers. We will update the table as soon as this is in.
