Paras Kuhad & Associates' ex-Mumbai head has started a new firm under the banner Vidhii Partners, along with one partner and three associates from the firm which merged with Hemant Sahai earlier this month.

As reported on Legally India last week, Paras Kuhad's Mumbai office founding partner Manish Desai had resigned one-and-a-half months before the firm merged with Hemant Sahai Associates on 1 October.

He is joined at Vidhii Partners by former Paras Kuhad associate partner Sowjanya Menon and litigation senior associates Dhiren Sinha and Sudeshna Guha Roy and associate Thomas Karimpanal.

Litigation and banking partner Menon resigned from the firm one day after the merger to create PHA Advocates was announced internally. With Desai, she was one of two other lawyers who started Paras Kuhad's Mumbai office in 2002, growing it to a size of 40.

Desai said that Vidhii Partners would focus on litigation and banking work and would operate a profit sharing model across the firm. "The whole idea is to give a share of the growth and profit to everybody. Not just limited to the partners but will be across the board."

He stated that the he would not solicit any Paras Kuhad clients but added: "If [clients] do approach us, definitely, it is a competitive world."

He added that the firm was currently operating out of temporary premises in Fort but that the firm had leased an office near Dadar, which is close to Worli and would be operational within 45 days after renovations.

The word vidhii, said Desai, meant law and destiny in Hindi. "I wanted two things - I wanted an Indian name and I wanted a neutral name so I decided to have a departure from the normal."
