NUJS Kolkata has extended the tuition fees payment deadline after students refuse to pay in protest against the fee-hike, which was announced only several weeks before the start of this term.
The National University of Juridicial Sciences Kolkata's (NUJS) tuition fees, which were doubled by the university in some cases, were originally due on 17 July 2009.
However, the deadline was extended to 10 August for students studying without a loan and to 31 August for those studying on a loan.
Outgoing NUJS student body president Ashish Arun said: "The administration has extended the last date to deposit the fees by a month and still most of us have not paid up."
NUJS' Student Juridical Association (SJA) had made a presentation to NUJS' finance committee, which decided to extend the fee payment deadline and to put the matter before the university's executive committee.
That committee is due to meet on 29 August and is set to take a final decision on the fee-hike then.
"Let's see what happens," said Arun.
A senior staff member of the University, who preferred not to be named, confirmed that the deadline had been postponed. However, he declined to comment until the outcome of the executive committee meeting.
A concern from the University is understood to be that even after the increase in fees, the college's expenses are set to exceed its income.
The students will argue that the fees should not be increased immediately but should instead be increased gradually.
Legally India reported last month that a student had won an appeal in the Andra Pradesh High Court to allow her to transfer to National Law University Jodhpur, after the fee hike was announced a short time before term and after students had already accepted their place at NUJS.
The five-year course costs for first-year students were increased by 100 per cent, with second to fifth year students seeing a rise in costs of almost 50 per cent.

The case was a bit more complex than this.
The student had applied to NUJS through the NRI category hoping to make it to NUJS even if her marks were less (NRI's cut off are slightly less than for the general category).
NUJS then had this huge fee hike. The student could no longer pay the amount.
Now comes the tricky part.
CLAT authorities say in their forms that preference for colleges mentioned by the applicants will not be changed. The student now had no option but to join NUJS and pay the fee which she could not pay. She could not go to NALSAR (the second preference) because her rank did not allow her to do so and neither could she move to NLU Jodhpur because of CLAT authority's above mentioned stipulation (no change in preferences).
The fee hike seems absolutely unjustified considering the limited options that remain
The situation is pathetic here because almost all other law schools get hefty grants from their state government. As far the WB is concerned, the less you talk about the government, the better it is.
Hopefully, the Executive Committee would understand that everyone cannot pay such high fees and will roll back the hike, atleast to some extent.
Please keep the comments flowing in.
