Khaitan & Co has hired senior associate Bharat Anand from UK magic circle firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

He will start as a Khaitan partner in its New Delhi office after having left Freshfields in January 2009.

Commenting on Anand’s departure a Freshfields spokesperson said: “We wish him the best for his future in India and look forward to keeping in contact with him.”

Anand is dual English and Indian qualified and first joined Freshfields London office 2001.

He specialises in corporate and commercial work with an India slant, having assisted Freshfields’ German offices in advising German industrial giant Siemens on a €4.2bn acquisition.

Freshfields is currently the only one of the UK magic circle firms without an official link-up with an Indian firm, although it is consistently rumoured to be close to Platinum Partners and Bharucha & Partners through the ties of Freshfields alumni.

Clifford Chance announced its link-up with Amarchand rival AZB & Partners early this year, with Allen & Overy (A&O) having tied-up with Trilegal in 2008 and Linklaters with Talwar Thakore & Associates in 2006.
